Don't gimme me your sales BS

Rant alert.

I chat to a lot of people on this platform. Some I consider to be pals, peers, clients and potential clients.

Never once have I engaged in a cold sell to someone by following and instantly dropping them a surreptitious DM after liking three of their posts.

If you’ve met me, you’ll know I present here as I do in the 3D world. I write like I talk, and what you read is generally the person you get.

I’m proud of that. My business is built on my tone and my dislike of hard-nosed sales tactics.

So don’t force yours on me.

Let me be clear. You got market research you’d like to gather? I’m willing to help. Maybe we could work together in the future, who knows? This is all good.

What I am talking about is you – you who befriend me with fake pleasantries only to try and sell 10 seconds later by looking for ways to trigger me and frighten me into using your services.

Don’t slide like an eel into my DMs after taking all of 3 minutes to scantly view my feed and then attempt to throw me a ‘hook’ of a note  with a  sales message underbelly that you think will appeal to my personality.

Don’t think that others won’t see through this. They do. It’s shitty.

  • Showing up and being your friendly self – I feel. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  • Showing up to probe me and hail inauthentically at my vibe before poorly positioning yourself into ‘stealth’ sales mode – I see through it.

Equally, don’t use me as your portal to other victims by mass-following all my connections in the hope of making your way up the digital social ladder.

It’s age-old. And it ain’t a pretty sight.

Here’s a thought: why not position yourself as a go-to person for the job? Why not actually engage and care what your audience feels and show a smidgen of authenticity doing it?

Why not show you’re capable of a bit of integrity with proper, down-to-earth behaviour that TAKES TIME to do rather than sneakily sliding into every Tom, Dick and Katy’s DMs?

If you are good at something and believe in your skills, then don’t lower yourself to these cringy marketing techniques in the hope of a bite. It’s not attractive or good business, frankly. In this day and age people buy into people, and into brands they feel give a shit about them and their values. Not get-sales quick schemes.

Let’s get some self-respect and pride, shall we?

Over and out.
